Ledgers Fall At State In OT

St. Mary’s Springs’ girls basketball team saw their tournament run end in the Division 4 State Semifinals, falling defending champion Algoma 42-37 in overtime at the Resch Center in Green Bay.  The Ledgers fell behind Algoma 11-2 midway through the first quarter before rallying late to cut the deficit to just a bucket at 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.  Algoma held that same two point lead 23-21 at the break.  St. Mary’s Springs was able to battle back and take a 29-25 lead with 3:44 left in the 3rd.  Algoma pulled back even at 31-31 at the end of three.  The Ledgers took a 37-36 lead with 6:03 left in the 4th quarter and did not score the rest of the way.  Algoma pulled even at 37 with 5:20 to go in the period and neither team scored the rest of the regulation.  Algoma outscored Springs 5-0 in the OT to grab the win and a chance to defend their D4 title.  Kelly Schrauth led Springs with 17 points and 13 rebounds.  Melanie Schneider added nine points as SMSA’s season ends at 23-4.  Algoma will play Cuba City on Saturday afternoon for the state title.
