Local Sports – Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Martin Maldonado’s 3rd inning grand slam is all the offense the Brewers would need in a 4-3 win over San Diego on Tuesday night at Miller Park.  Jim Henderson pitched the seventh inning and notched in the win in relief of Tyler Thornburg.   John Axford threw the 9th for his 35th save of the season.  The Crew wraps up their 2012 season tonight against the Padres.  Yovani Gallardo was scratched from today’s start.  Instead rookie Josh Stinson will take the mound for the Brewers.  Coverage begins at 6:35pm on KFIZ.

Manager Ron Roenicke also said the entire coaching staff will return for the 2013 season.

Baseball’s regulars season ends today with a lot still up for grabs.  In the AL West Oakland plays Texas with the team’s tied on top of the division.  The Yankees hold a one game lead over the Orioles in the AL East.  The Yanks host Boston and Baltimore is at Tampa Bay.  The Cardinals clinched the NL Wild Card on Tuesday with the Dodgers 4-3 loss to the Giants.  The Braves host the Cardinals in the new 1 game Wild Card matchup on Friday.  One other note from baseball, the Tigers Miguel Cabrera is in line to win baseball’s first Triple Crown since Carl Yastrzemski did in for Boston in 1967.  He leads the American League with a .331 batting average with 44 homers and 139 RBI.

The Packers get back on the practice field today as they get ready for the Colts at Indy on Sunday.  Coverage begins at 10am with Sunday’s kickoff set for Noon on KFIZ.

The Badgers host Illinois on Saturday at Camp Randall.  Coverage begins at 12:30pm with the kickoff set for 2:30pm on KFIZ.

The Bucks hit the practice floor for the first time on Tuesday with returning the playoffs as one of their main goals.  The Bucks first preseason game is Tuesday in Cleveland.

Cross Country
The WLA Viking boys CC team finished 2nd to Waupun in the Large School Division at the Laconia Invitational Tuesday. Mitchell Bilitz won the race and Eric Bilitz finished 3rd of the 103 runners in the race.
The WLA girls CC team finished 4th of 6 teams in the Large School Division at the same meet. The co-op Oakfield and North Fondy cross country teams finished strong in Laconia at the last regular meet of the season. Jenny Schwersinske took 26th adn Sierra Giebel took 36th. For the boys, Ryan Easterson was the top finisher at 30th followed by Christian Schumann, 39th, Noah Giebel45th, Jared Bavers 47th and Damian Bath 48th. 

Girls Tennis
Fond du Lac had three girls advance to the Sectionals on Tuesday. Nicole Feltz won her match at #1 singles and the team of Emily Nett and Erin Cole also advanced at #1 doubles at the Beaver Dam Sub-Sectional on Tuesday.  The Sectional is on Thursday.
