Marian Hires New Men’s Hockey Coach

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Marian University director of athletics Jason Bartelt is pleased to announce the hiring of Erik Largen as the sixth head men’s ice hockey coach since its inception as a varsity program in 1995.

“The candidate pool was deep with outstanding, experienced and highly qualified applicants. It’s always exciting to get a great fit and that is what we have in Erik,” Bartelt said. “Erik blew us away with his energy and passion for this job. We knew quickly he was the right fit to lead our men’s hockey program.”

Largen is also very excited to be named the head men’s ice hockey coach at Marian.

“I am so thrilled and excited to be a part of the Marian family,” Largen said. “I would like to thank Mr. Bartelt, the search committee and everyone involved in the process. I believe we have great leadership from our administration to make this a very successful transition and I am very happy and blessed to be a part of it.”

Largen comes to Marian after two years as an assistant coach for the Janesville Jets of the North American Hockey League. His duties included recruiting, working with defensemen, running the power play and preparing daily practice routines.

Prior to his stint with the Jets, Largen was an assistant coach for the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League and primarily worked with defensemen and goaltenders.

Largen was head coach of the Twin Cities Northern Lights in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League in 2011-12 and 2012-13. The Northern Lights compiled an impressive 87-9-2 regular season record and qualified for the USA Hockey Tier III National Tournament in both years.

The Fairbanks, Alaska native played for his hometown team, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2006-08 before beginning his coaching career as an assistant with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL.
