Spartans Fall Short in D3 Title Game to Marshall

Marshall 64, Laconia 56

Kiarra Otto scored a game-high 27 points, with Haley Rens adding 11, but it was Marshall who held the gold ball high as the Cardinals defeated Laconia in Saturday’s Division 3 Championship Game at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The Spartans trailed for most of the first half, but were able to pull in front briefly at 23-22 with 3:24 left to play before halftime. Marshall closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 29-24 at the break. Laconia grabbed a 39-38 lead at the 11:45 mark of the second half – and had the game tied at 43 with 10:12 to play, but Marshall flexed their muscle, extending the lead out to as much as nine points down the stretch.

Laconia closes out a history-making season by finishing as state runner up in Division 3 in their first ever appearance at state. The Spartans finish with a 27-1 record – and have posted a 52-2 record over the last two seasons. Marshall was led by 26 points from Anna Lutz, and 12 points apiece from Laura Nickel and Mia Morel. The win gives the Cardinals back-to-back titles, and four overall after the school won championships in 1976 and 1977.
