The 2016 High School Football Season begins for teams around the area tonight.

The Fond du Lac Cardinals play host to Appleton West at Fruth Field tonight. Head coach Mike Gnewuch says that despite losing some players to graduation, there’s a good group of upperclassmen  and young players suiting up for the Cardinals this year. Hear tonight’s Cardinals game on KFIZ, coverage starts at 5:30 with the Tim Cruz American Family Insurance kickoff show, kickoff at 7pm.

The St. Mary’s Springs Ledgers will host Shiocton at Fruth Field Saturday night. Coach Bob Hyland says that despite recent success, including two consecutive division six state championships, he’s tried to keep his team focused on this week only Hear tomorrow’s game on KFIZ, pregame at 6:30, kickoff at 7pm.

Winnebago Lutheran Academy opens their season on the road at Kettle Moraine Lutheran tonight. Head coach John Boggs says the goal for this year’s Vikings squad is simple, they want to continue to play into November and advance beyond level 2 of the WIAA playoffs.

Down in Oakfield, the Oaks open another season of eight man football tonight in non-conference action at Oneida Nation. Head coach Corey Rickert says despite the loss of key seniors, the team will take the next step as a group

Girls swimming & diving: Fond du Lac  beats DePere 96-74

Girl’s tennis, Waupun won over Kewaunee 4-3

Girl’s golf: Fond du Lac’s Cassidy Kahl shot a 41 at the FVA dual meet vs. Oshkosh West at Lakeshore Golf Course

Eddie Lacy and John Crockett each ran for a score in the Packers 20-12 win over the Oakland Raiders in preseason game number two at Lambeau Field. Lacy had nine carries for 45 yards in the game. Aaron Rodgers was a healthy scratch, so backup Brett Hundley started the game, but left after re-injuring his ankle. Coach Mike McCarthy says the injury isn’t serious. He also said the defense took a big step from last week to this week. The Packers will be on the road for their next two preseason games, first up is next Friday on the road at San Francisco.

The Cubs completed a four game sweep of the Brewers yesterday with a 9-6 win at Wrigley Field. Jake Arrieta earned his 15th win of the season, despite giving up five runs and walking 7 Brewers batters. Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Hernan Perez each hit home runs for Milwaukee in the loss. The Brewers open a series at Seattle tonight, a game we will not have on KFIZ due to high school football coverage.
