In the NFL:

The deadline for NFL teams to cut rosters down to the 53 man limit was 3pm Saturday and the Packers made a number of moves to reach the cap.

One of the moves that came as a surprise to Packer fans, was the release of guard Josh Sitton. Sitton was drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 draft and started 112 of 113 regular season games and all 13 postseason games for the team the last 8 years. Sitton was also named to the Pro Bowl three times. General Manager Ted Thompson said, “We want to thank Josh for his contributions during his time in Green Bay. He has been an important part of the success we have enjoyed on the field,. While these decisions are never easy, this was done with a focus on what is best for the team and the growth of the offensive line.”

Other players released by the Packers Saturday included: WR Geronimo Allison, LB Sam Barrington, LB Carl Bradford, LB Beniquez Brown, CB Robertson Daniel, CB Warren Gatewood, LB Reggie Gilbert, LS Rick Lovato, G Lucas Patrick, TE Casey Pierce, DT Brian Price, RB Brandon Ross, FB Alstevis Squirewell, WR Herb Waters, S Jermaine Whitehead and QB Marquise Williams. The team also placed DT Tyler Kurder and center Kyle Steuck on Injured Reserve, Center Corey Linsley on the Physically Unable to Perform list and CB Demetri Goodson and DT Mike Pennel on the reserve/suspended list.

College Football:

A 47 yard field goal from Rafael Gaglianone with 3:47 left in the 4th quarter ended up being enough to lift the Badgers to a 16-14 win over the #5 ranked LSU Tigers in the Lambeau Field College Classic on Saturday. The Badgers led 6-0 at halftime and took a 13-0 lead with a touchdown run from Corey Clement with 10:55 left in the 3rd quarter. LSU took a 14-13 lead after a interception return for a touchdown and a touchdown reception by Travin Dural with 4:21 left in the game. Badgers safety D’Cota Dixon sealed the game with an interception of LSU quarterback Brandon Harris late in the 4th quarter. The Badgers will host Akron at Camp Randall Stadium next Saturday.

The Brewers scored four runs in the 8th inning to top the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4 at Miller Park on Saturday. Tied at two, Milwaukee got run-scoring singles from Orlando Arcia, Manny Pina and Keon Broxton to take a 6-2 lead. Starling Marte homered for the Pirates and John Jaso drove in a run in the bottom of the 8th to pull Pittsburgh within 6-4, but an RBI single by Chris Carter in the 9th and a scoreless inning of work by Tyler Thornburg for his 8th save of the year sealed the win. The final game of the series is today, a 12-noon pregame on KFIZ.
