The Laconia Spartans baseball team was named a recipient of the WIAA/Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award for the spring/summer season. It’s the second time Laconia has won the award and the first time in spring baseball. They finished runner-up in Division 3, falling 10-0 to Aquinas in the title game after defeating Iola-Scandinavia 5-4 in the semifinals. The Spartans also received the award in boys basketball in 2002.

Northwoods League (North):

Eau Claire 9, Duluth 7

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders are back in action tonight after an off-day Wednesday. Fondy hits the road for a four-game road trip that begins with two games against the Rockford Rivets. Rockford is in first place in the south division for the second half of the year with an 18-8 record. That puts them one game up on Wisconsin Rapids and Battle Creek. Meanwhile, Fondy sits 2 & ½ games behind Rapids and Battle Creek with a 14-11 second half record. The Dock Spiders are 3 & ½ games back of Rockford entering tonight’s game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm from Rivets Stadium.

–Yadier Molina went 3 for 4 with two home runs as the Cardinals defeated the Brewers at Miller Park Wednesday night. The Brewers tried to mount a late-inning rally with an RBI single from Hernan Perez in the 7th and a two-run home run Jesus Aguilar in the 8th, but Trevor Rosenthal of the cards shut out the crew in the final 1 & ⅓ innings. Eric Thames also homered in the loss for Milwaukee, his 25th of the year. The final game of the series is this afternoon, Matt Garza goes for Milwaukee while Michael Wacha counters for St. Louis. The Packers were off Wednesday and return to the practice field tonight for their first evening practice of camp. The team will practice at 6:15 tonight and tomorrow night and will host the family night scrimmage on Saturday evening.
