Monday’s High School Results:

Boys Soccer:

Central Wisconsin Christian 5, Lomira 1

New Holstein 8, Roncalli 2

Cross Country: Waupun Boys finish 2nd, Girls finish 3rd at the Columbus Invite. Kyle Miller placed 1st individually to lead the boys, Peyton McGinnis placed 2nd individually to lead the girls.

Saint Mary’s Springs is once again at the top of this week’s Associated Press Wisconsin High School Football Poll. The Ledgers are 8-0 and clinched the Flyway Conference Championship with a win over Laconia last week. The Ledgers wrap up the regular season with a game against Mayville on Thursday.

The Hierl Insurance High School Team(s) of the week are the Football teams within the city of Fond du Lac. The Fond du Lac Cardinals clinched a playoff spot last week with a 54-13 win over Wisconsin Rapids, their 5th win in a row. Saint Mary’s Springs defeated Laconia 61-15 to move to 8-0 and to claim the Flyway Conference Crown, and the Winnebago Lutheran Vikings defeated Mayville 24-0 to become playoff eligible on the year.

Packers begin preparations for the Dallas Cowboys who come to town on Sunday. They boast a strong running attack, led by rookie Ezekiel Elliott. Head coach Mike McCarthy says he’s looking forward to the challenge of stopping their running game, which is tops in the league.

The Badgers play under the lights against Ohio State at Camp Randall on Saturday. Head Coach Paul Chrystsays the fact that Ohio State has lost a lot to the NFL, but they’re still a power team makes them a healthy program.

The Wisconsin Badgers climbed in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 despite being on their bye week last week. Wisconsin climbed three spots to number 10 in the Coaches Poll and three spots to number 8 in the AP top 25. In the AP poll, the top 5 remains unchanged with Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan and Washington holding steady at their respective positions. Texas A&M climbs two spots to number six, Louisville holds steady at seven, with the Badgers at 8, Tennessee steady at nine and Nebraska jumps 2 spots to 10 to make for four big ten teams in the top 10 in the regular season for the first time since 1960.

The kickoff time for the Badgers’ game against West Division rival Iowa has been set. The battle for the Heartland Trophy will begin at 11am on Saturday the 22nd and will air on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN 2. The network will be announced following this week’s games. The Hawkeyes won last year’s meeting 10-6 at Camp Randall Stadium, on its way to a 12-0 regular season and the West Division Championship. The two teams have split their 10 meetings since the Heartland Trophy was added to the rivalry in 2004. The Badgers look to win their fourth consecutive game at Kinnick Stadium, with their last triumph coming in 2014, by a 26-24 margin.

The Brewers announced their postseason award winners Monday, as selected by a five-person panel from the Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Left Fielder Ryan Braun earned the team’s Most Valuable Player Award for the second consecutive season and fourth time overall. Braun batted .305 with 30 home runs and 91 RBI in 135 games. Junior Guerra was named the team’s Most Valuable Pitcher, going 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 20 starts. Other award winners were Infielder Jonathan Villar, who earned Top Newcomer accolades, Utility Player Hernan Perez was named the team’s Unsung Hero and First baseman Chris Carter earned the “Good Guy” award.

Baseball:

National League Division Series:

Washington 8, LA Dodgers 3. Nationals take a 2-1 series lead.

San Francisco 6, Chicago Cubs 5 (13 Innings). Giants avoid the sweep and force a game four that will be played tonight in San Francisco. Cubs lead the series 2-1.

American League Division Series:

Cleveland 3, Boston 0. Indians sweep the best of five series 3-0. Cleveland will face Toronto in the American League Championship Series that begins Friday.
