Springs Football wins Seventh WIAA Title

Mitch Waechter threw for two touchdowns, both to Cade Christensen as St. Mary’s Springs won the Division Six State Championship with a 35-12 win over Iola-Scandinavia at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison on Thursday.


The Thunderbirds found the end zone first on a short touchdown run from Bryce Huettner with 3:27 left to play in the first quarter. Springs would answer on the ensuing drive on a 39 yard touchdown pass from Mitch Waechter to Cade Christensen to take a 7-6 lead. Iola-Scandinavia would retake the lead with 7:45 left in the second quarter on a seven yard run from Huettner to make the score 12-7. The T-Birds would then force a three and out from Springs, but Huettner would fumble while trying to pick up a first down. The Ledgers recovered the fumble at their own 23 yard line with 2:56 left before halftime. Waechter would drive the Ledgers down and connect with Christensen for the second time on the afternoon with two seconds left in the half, this one from seven yards out, to gain a 14-12 advantage at the break.


The second half was all St. Mary’s Springs, as Waechter and Clay Schueffner each scored on touchdown runs and the Ledgers put the game away on a touchdown pass from Christensen to Waechter to create the game’s final margin.


Springs outgained Iola-Scandinavia 442-281 in the win, rushing for 262 yards and throwing for 180. Mitch Waechter was 8 for 12 passing for 142 yards and two touchdowns, Clay Schueffner had 14 carries for 88 yards and a score, while Cade Christensen caught three passes for 78 yards and two scores, along with his passing touchdown. Bryce Huettner had 33 carries for 216 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for Iola-Scandinavia


With the win, the Ledgers finish the season a perfect 14-0, while Iola-Scandinavia ends the year 11-3. The Championship is St. Mary’s Springs seventh WIAA title to go along with eight WISAA titles.
