Day one of the sturgeon spearing season is in the books, and the numbers are in from the first day on the ice from both Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. 97 fish were taken from Lake Winnebago with another 130 fish registered on the upriver lakes. The busiest stations on Lake Winnebago were at Stockbridge Harbor (30 fish) and Payne’s Point (18 fish), with Indian Point (58 fish) and Critters (54 fish) the busiest on the upriver lakes. DNR Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs says the opening day harvest is very similar to last year’s opener – where 83 fish were taken on Lake Winnebago and 130 fish on the upriver lakes. Koenigs estimates the spearing season on Winnebago will last the full 15 days, but will end in about five to seven days on the Upriver Lakes.  Jonathan Eiden of Appleton had the largest fish on opening day – his sturgeon measured 85.5 inches and weighed in at 171 pounds.
