Sturgeon Report - Day 2: 2/10/19

Michael Bohow had the largest sturgeon speared on Sunday - photo from the Wisconsin DNR.

Day two of the sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago System saw 108 fish harvested in total, 56 of those came from Lake Winnebago and 52 from the upriver lakes. With opening weekend in the books, 153 fish were taken from Lake Winnebago on the first two days of the season – with 182 taken on the upriver lakes between Saturday and Sunday. DNR Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs says the total harvest of adult females on the upriver lakes sits at 57.9 percent of the cap after this weekend. That puts the season at 40 adult females away from the cap – and 31 adult females away from the 90-percent trigger. He predicts the season on the upriver lakes to close either Thursday or Friday.

The largest fish speared on Sunday belonged to Michael Bohow – his sturgeon weighed in at 148.3 pounds & measured 77.1 inches long – he registered the fish at the Critters station. Michael Popp of Fond du Lac had the largest sturgeon on Lake Winnebago Sunday – his fish weighed 124.7 pounds and was 69.1 inches long. Popp registered his fish at Calumet Harbor.
