Day five of the sturgeon spearing season on the Lake Winnebago System saw an increase in the number of fish speared from day four. Wednesday’s harvest saw 26 fish taken – 14 on Lake Winnebago and 12 from the Upriver Lakes. That’s compared to Tuesday’s grand total of 10 fish speared on the entire system. The largest fish harvested on Wednesday went to Tom Walters of Oshkosh. His sturgeon was 87.1 pounds and was just over 72 inches long. Domonick Schroeder of Oshkosh had the largest fish on the Upriver Lakes. His sturgeon was 74.1 pounds and 64.6 inches long. The harvest on the upriver lakes is just 21 adult females away from the 90% trigger – so the season is expected to last into the weekend.
