Sturgeon Report - Day 8 : 2/16/19

85 fish were speared on the Lake Winnebago System on Saturday as the sturgeon spearing season continued. The season is halfway through on Lake Winnebago itself and is one day closer to closure on the upriver lakes. 53 of the 85 fish speared on Saturday were from Lake Winnebago with 32 harvested on the upriver lakes. With eight adult females taken on the upriver lakes on Saturday, only six more fish are needed to reach the 90 percent trigger. Once that trigger is reached – the season will close the next day. The DNR tells us there is a chance the 90% trigger could be reached tomorrow, which means the season would close on Monday. Spearers with unfilled tags for the upriver lakes are advised to keep track of tomorrow’s harvest numbers to see how long the season will continue.

The largest fish speared Saturday went to Timothy Metz of Menasha – who registered a 110.6 pound, 72.1 inch sturgeon at Critters on the Upriver Lakes. The largest fish on Lake Winnebago went to David Berndt of Winneconne. His fish was 98.5 pounds and 74 inches long and registered at Jerry’s Bar in Oshkosh.
