WIAA says Girls State Basketball Tournament, Boys Sectionals will Continue; “Discussing Options” on Boys Tournament

The Wisconsin Interscholastic
Athletic Association says the State Girls Basketball Tournament and the boys basketball
sectionals scheduled for this week “will continue as planned”, despite concerns
over the spread of COVID-19 or the coronavirus.

The WIAA said in a statement
Wednesday that they continue to work with local and state health officials as
well as other high school associations in the Midwest to make “the best
decision possible” when it comes to carrying on their tournaments. The
statement read, in part:

“While circumstances may
change, all of the leading health resources we have been working with indicated
the best way to proceed is to be overcautious and reinforce the universal
guidance and precautions to know your health risk, especially those at higher
risk for severe illness; wash hands repeatedly with soap or sanitizer; cover
your sneeze or cough; keep hands away from your face; and if you feel sick,
stay at home.”

The WIAA also says they have “discussed
options for continuing to conduct the WIAA Boys Basketball State Tournament,”
and that they will “continue to discuss all options.” The boys’ tournament is
scheduled to take place at the Kohl Center on the UW-Madison campus the 19th
through the 21st. The university on Wednesday cancelled all campus
events of “more than 50 people” through at least April 10th. It’s
not yet known how that would impact the boys state tournament.
