WIAA Votes to Move Forward With HS Sports This Fall; Start to Practice, Season Delayed

23-Jul-2020

There will be high school sports this fall in Wisconsin, but the start of practices and games will just be delayed.

The WIAA Board of Control voted 8-3 in a special meeting today (Thursday) to approve a new plan for fall athletics in the state.

Practice for fall sports that are considered “low-risk”, meaning they have little contact and allow for more physical distancing, will begin August 17th. Included in this grouping is boys and girls cross country, girls tennis, girls golf and girls swimming.

Practice for sports that are considered “high-risk”, will begin September 7th. This grouping includes football, boys and girls volleyball and boys soccer.

For fans of high school football, this means the first games will not take place until September 24th or 25th. The plan approved by the WIAA, as it stands now, includes a six-week regular season and a three week postseason.

The WIAA also approved a spring opportunity for schools that choose not to participate in fall sports. Details on what that opportunity will include have not been released. The motion approved Thursday also includes a backup plan for fall sports to be moved to the spring.
