The Latest Sports Headlines:

>>Packers Wrap Up Virtual Off-Season Friday

(Green Bay, WI)  --  The Green Bay Packers will wrap up their virtual offseason program Friday – one week ahead of time.  The NFL deadline is June 26th.  Head coach Matt LaFleur tells Packers-dot-com he and his staff will spend the next week reviewing things with the players, then they will be on their own until training camp.  The continuing uncertainty about the coronavirus pandemic means there are still some questions about when that camp will start.  If things don’t get underway on time in late July, the preseason could be reduced to two games.

>>Brewers Getting High Marks For 2020 Free Agent Draft Picks

(Milwaukee, WI)  --  Outfielder Garrett Mitchell could be a star and it looks like shortstop Freddy Zamora has the talent to be a solid major league starter.  Sports websites are giving the Milwaukee Brewers consistently high marks for their choices in the 2020 Major League Baseball Free Agent draft.  The grades range from a “B” from Fantasy Pros to at least three “A” grades from CBS Sports, Bleacher Report and Reviewing the Brew.  Milwaukee went hard for pitchers last year.  The strategy of going all-in on hitters this time has impressed the experts.

>>4 Wisconsin Badgers Chosen For 2020 World Junior Summer Showcase

(Plymouth, MI)  --  Four Wisconsin Badgers have been invited to next month’s 2020 World Junior Summer Showcase.  Coaches for the U-S National Junior Team will be evaluating candidates for the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship later this year.  The Showcase will run eight days in Plymouth, Michigan starting July 24th.  Badgers Alex Turcotte, Cole Caufield, Owen Lindmark and Sam Stange will be working to qualify for the championship in Canada starting the day after Christmas and running through January 5th.

>>NCAA Decides D.J. Carton Won’t Have To Sit Out At Marquette

(Milwaukee, WI)  --  The NCAA has approved a waiver for transfer guard D-J Carton.  That means the former Ohio State Buckeye will be able to play immediately for Marquette and Carton will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.  Carton started three of the 20 games he played for Ohio State, averaging 10 points, almost three rebounds and three assists-a-game.  If he is able to take over as point guard for the Golden Eagles, it will help the team’s freshman inside players get going in Division One basketball a lot faster.  Four of the 10 players on the Marquette roster for the coming season have never played a minute at the highest level of college basketball.

>>NCAA Division I Council Approves Model For Football Teams Getting Ready For 2020

(Indianapolis, IN)  --  The NCAA Division One Council has approved a model for football teams like the Wisconsin Badgers who are getting ready for the 2020 season.  That means coach Paul Chryst and his staff can put their plans together for summer workouts and preseason camp.  It starts with up to eight hours of weight training, conditioning and film review July 13th through the 23rd.  During the next two-week period between July 24th and August 6th, student-athletes can be required to take part in up to 20 hours of sport-related activities each week.  Then, preseason camps can open August 7th.

>>Former Wisconsin All-American Troy Vincent Nominated For 2021 College Football HOF Class

(Irving, TX)  --  Former Wisconsin All-American Troy Vincent is a 2021 candidate for the College Football Hall of Fame.  Fifty-year-old Vincent was a first-team All-American cornerback in 1991 and finished runner-up for the Thorpe Award.  Vincent was first nominated for the 2017 class.  He was taken number-seven overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 1992 NFL Draft and is now the executive vice president of football operations for the league.  A total of 78 players and seven coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 99 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks were nominated for the '21 class.  UW-Whitewater kicker Jeff Schebler is on the Divisional Player ballot.  Carthage legend Art Keller and Whitewater great Forrest Perkins are on the Divisional Coaches ballot.  Former Burlington High School and Eastern Illinois quarterback Tony Romo is also a nominee.

>>Green Bay Packers Awards $500K to Organizations in Brown and Milwaukee Counties

(Green Bay, WI)  --  The Green Bay Packers Foundation is awarding 500-thousand dollars in impact grants to organizations providing basic needs to people impacted by COVID-19.  Fourteen nonprofits in Brown County and six in Milwaukee County will each receive 25-thousand-dollar grants.  President Mark Murphy said, "the Packers Foundation and the Packers are pleased to be able to assist these organizations in their efforts to assist individuals and families who have challenges in meeting their basic, weekly needs."  He says the pandemic continues to impact our communities in so many ways.

>>2021 NFL Pro Bowl To Be Held In New Las Vegas Stadium

(Las Vegas, NV)  --  The National Football League has announced its 2021 Pro Bowl will be hosted by the new Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.  The game will be played January 31st – the Sunday before the Super Bowl.  The exhibition between some of the best players in pro football has been played in locations like Hawaii, Florida and Arizona.  The Raiders will play their first season at the one-point-nine billion-dollar stadium starting in September.
