Wisconsin Sports Headlines - 6/23/2020

23-Jun-2020

The Latest Sports Headlines:

>>Major League Baseball’s Return:  July 24th

(Milwaukee, WI)  --  The Milwaukee Brewers and the rest of Major League Baseball will return to action with an abbreviated spring training next month, then start the season July 24th. The players’ union had rejected the latest offer from the owners Monday by a 33-to-five vote.  That’s when Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred stepped in and issued a unilateral order for the regular season to start.  That is expected to lead to lengthy and costly litigation over the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

>>Website Gives Packers Low Grade For 2020 NFL Draft:  D

(Green Bay, WI)  --  NFL Mocks-dot-com isn’t too impressed with the Packers’ decisions in April’s 2020 draft.  Columnist Sayre Bedinger gave letter grades to each team for their draft class and Green Bay got a “D.”  Bedinger downgraded the Packers for deciding not to take a wide receiver and he called the timing of the Jordan Love selection “way off.”  He does think offensive lineman Jake Hanson was a steal and a player who can become a starter quicker than expected.  If A-J Dillon has an impact on the offense, one of the linemen develops into a starter, and Josiah Deguara contributes, LombariAve-dot-com writer Freddie Boston says it can still be a good draft for Green Bay.

>>Bucks Star’s Younger Brother Will Play In Spain

(Milwaukee, WI)  --  The younger brother of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has signed a deal to play professional basketball in Spain.  Alex Antetokounmpo was a standout performer at Dominican High School in Milwaukee.  Multiple reports indicate his contract with U-C-A-M Murcia is for three years and it includes out-clauses for him to jump to the NBA. The younger Antetokounmpo was a two-time Wisconsin all-state selection and averaged 20 points-a-game last season for Dominican.  He will be eligible for the NBA draft next year.

>>WIAA To Decide Whether Girls Wrestling Becomes Sanctioned Sport

(Stevens Point, WI)  --  The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association decides Wednesday whether to make girls wrestling a sanctioned sport.  Only two girls have qualified for the state wrestling tournament since the competition started eight decades ago.  Alyssa Lampe of Tomahawk High School was the first in 2004.  Support for the approval is growing with about 120 superintendents signing a petition of support.

>>Two Athletes Test Positive for COVID-19 During Initial Screening

(Madison, WI) -- University of Wisconsin officials say that two Badgers' athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 and are self-isolating. Those positive results came from the more than one-hundred athletes who participated in the school's initial campus screening. The Wisconsin athletic department's infection response team is monitoring the recovery of the athletes but didn't specify which teams the two play for. Wisconsin plans to release the aggregate number of positive tests at regular intervals during the initial phase of athletes' return to campus.
