>>Former Badger Star Ethan Happ Named To All-Decade Big Ten Network Team

(Chicago, IL)  —  Former Badger star Ethan Happ has been named among the best players in the Big Ten Conference for the past decade.  The Big Ten Network made the announcement Tuesday.  Happ was joined on the second team by Michigan State’s Cassius Winston, Purdue’s Carsen Edwards, Indiana’s Victor Oladipo and Jared Sullinger of Ohio State.  Happ made first-team All-Big Ten three seasons and finished in third place among the Badgers program’s all-time scoring leaders.  He was also first in rebounds, first in blocked shots and first in double-doubles with 52.

 

>>Players To Owners:  OK, We’ll Be There July 1st

(Undated)  —  The players’ union has informed Major League Baseball its members will report for the resumption of spring training July 1st.  The union actually rejected the last offer from owners, leading Commission Rob Manfred to mandate the start of the season on July 24th.  There will be some major changes meaning this won’t be like past seasons.  For one, all teams will have a designated hitter in the lineup.  Regional play will be featured to limit travel, meaning the Milwaukee Brewers will continue to play opponents from the National League Central Division, like the Cubs, but they will also meet teams from the American League Central Division, like the Detroit Tigers.  The playoffs will only include 10 teams – not the 16 the owners wanted.

 

>>Badgers Holding Voluntary Workouts For Football, With Mandatory Work Possible In Mid-July

(Madison, WI)  —  The Wisconsin Badgers football team reports 100 of its 123 eligible players have reported this week for voluntary workouts.  The NCAA just ruled that schools can make those workouts mandatory the middle of next month, with preseason practices getting underway in August.  Badgers head coach Paul Chryst says, for now, he and his staff are just taking it day-to-day. The voluntary workouts started Monday with all schools following COVID-19 protocols to keep players safe.

 

>>Milwaukee Boxer Javier Martinez Makes Pro Debut June 30th

(Las Vegas, NV)  —  Milwaukee boxer Javier Martinez will make his professional debut as a middleweight in Las Vegas June 30th.  The 24-year-old is ranked number one at 165 pounds by USA Boxing in the Elite Division.  He signed a multi-year contract with Top Rank promotions after being left behind by the U-S Olympic team – despite beating the competitor who took his slot, twice.  Martinez is trying to become the second Milwaukee native to win a professional boxing world title 98 years after Pinky Mitchell was named junior welterweight world champ.

 

>>PGA Championship Will Stay At TPC Harding Park With No Fans

(San Francisco, CA)  —  The PGA has decided to keep its championship tournament at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco this summer.  The PGA of America considered several other locations.  One of four major pro golf championships had been moved previously from mid-May to early August because of the coronavirus. TPC Harding has hosted five U-S Open Championships in the past.  There will be no golf fans at this year’s PGA Championship to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

 

>>Retired Cowboys C, Former Badger Frederick Wins George Halas Award

(Frisco, TX)  —  Retired Dallas Cowboys center and former Wisconsin Badger Travis Frederick is the winner of the 2020 George Halas Award.  The Pro Football Writers of America presents the award to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes adversity to succeed.  Frederick was selected to the 2019 Pro Bowl after missing the entire 2018 season due to Guillain-Barre syndrome.  Frederick was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system in 2018.  The Cowboys selected Frederick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin.
