Carlton “Mac” McDermott

Carlton “Mac” McDermott was born on December 4, 1934 in North Fond du Lac to Ella Ida Becker and John Edward “Ed” McDermott, the fourth of their five children.

Mac lived in and went to school in North Fond du Lac, graduating from NFDL High School in 1953. He worked as a mechanic at Yellowstone Garage until he joined the Army in 1957. He trained at Fort Leonard Wood MO and served with the 83rd Engineers in Chinon, France until 1960. After his discharge, he worked at Yellowstone until 1966 when he started driving truck for L&H Gyr. He drove truck for Gyr’s until his retirement in 1999, putting on more than one million miles in the city of Fond du Lac. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Kitz & Pfeil repairing windows and screens.

On December 29, 1962, he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann “Pat” Schneider in St Peter’s Church. They spent 43 years together, until her death in September 2006. He missed her so very much, was never truly happy without her, and they have finally been reunited.

Mac and Pat started their lives together running Pat & Mac’s Bar in Malone. They later lived in Silica and eventually moved to the house Mac built in St. Peter where they lived the rest of their lives. During this time they started their family with the births of their 3 daughters, BeLinda, Kelly, and Michel.

He loved all of his grandchildren very much. They transformed him into a big old teddy bear. He attended every ballgame, wrestling match, dance, band recital, and figure skating show. He was so proud of all his grandkids and enjoyed watching them succeed.

Mac had a quirky sense of humor, he loved to play tricks and tell jokes. He had an incredibly gifted, unique problem-solving skill. If he needed a tool that didn’t exist, he’d make one. He enjoyed gardening, planting a vegetable garden every May. Most of all, he loved woodworking, making items for everyday life, things people could use. He loved classic country, always had a radio on and sang along to the old tunes. He enjoyed playing cribbage and sheepshead with many groups of friends over the years.

Mac had suffered a stroke, and Pat came to take his hand on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, as he waited with their daughters. Survivors include his daughters and grandchildren: BeLinda Hollander of Brandon, Kelly (Chris) Nelson of Peshtigo and Michel (Skyler) Bryson of Oshkosh; Greg, Amanda and Josh Hollander, and Carly and Nik Nelson, and his cat, Sarge, who kept him company after Pat passed away. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; son-in-law, Randy Hollander; parents and siblings.

The visitation will be held from 10:00 am – 1:15 pm on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. The Liturgy of the Word service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 11, 2016 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, W3698 County Road WH, St. Peter, WI. Burial will follow in St. Peter Parish Cemetery.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

BeLinda, Kelly and Michel would like to thank the staff at Touchstone Living Center, where Dad stayed the last few months. They took such great care of him and got him walking again; he was very comfortable there. The family would also like to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center. They were incredibly kind and compassionate to Dad and us in his last days.
