Lucille “Lucy” Marie Block
Lucille
“Lucy” Marie Block, 95, went home to her Lord Jesus on May 14, 2015 after a
brief residency at the
Lucy was born in
on January 15, 1920 to Oscar and Eva (Maurice) Haring.
While
growing up, Lucy enjoyed musical events in her home, and fondly remembered
dancing with her father as family and friends played a variety of musical
instruments in their dining room. During her teenage years, Lucy played the
guitar and sang with her sister Gail on KFIZ Radio. She was a member of the
Junior Barn Dance Gang, and had the privilege of being backstage with Gene
Autry, Pat Buttram and George Gobel when they performed at the Retlaw Hotel.
Following
high school, she married Richard “Dick” A. Block on September 16, 1939 at the
church parsonage in Oakfield. In the early years of their marriage, Lucy and
Dick owned and operated Dick’s Grocery and Fountain in Oakfield. In 1955, they
purchased the Berry Patch in
Lac
away in 1976. Lucy had a heart for serving people and continued to touch lives
through her employment at McDonald’s, Pranges and Younkers. In November 2001,
at the age of 81, Lucy retired.
Lucy’s
love of music continued throughout her life. She was a member of Grace Reformed
Church and sang in the choir for many years. Singing brought her great joy,
which was evident by the smile on her face as she participated in the Easter
and Christmas cantatas, and Sunday services.
Lucy
traveled throughout her life, spending many winters in
tradition with her sister Gail, after Dick’s passing. In 1984, Lucy toured
brother-in-law. During that adventure, she had the opportunity to visit the
which she warmly spoke of anytime she recalled this vacation. She also enjoyed
many bus trips with friends, and occasional day trips and outings with family.
Lucy
had a very likable personality and developed friendships quickly with
co-workers and care givers. She always shared a smile and kind word with those
whom she came in contact. Her greatest love was her family. She enjoyed family
get-togethers and will be remembered for her deviled eggs, pumpkin bars,
“rollies” and especially her famous stuffing. She also enjoyed crocheting,
knitting, planting flowers and was an excellent seamstress.
Lucy
is survived by her two daughters Jeanne (Charles Jr.) Bloedorn and Margie
(Darrell) Gundelach. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Lori (Jeffrey)
Kotnick; Kimberly (Peter) Stilp; Cynthia (Scott) Marsden; Jodie (Mark) Stowe;
Amy (Luke) Martin; and
(Natalia) Gundelach. Her grandchildren blessed her with 17 great grandchildren,
who loved and adored their Granny: Fisher, Tucker and Oliver Kotnick; Conner,
Mackenzie and Auburn Stilp; Hunter Rising, Bennett, Porter, Emerson and Murphy
Marsden; Christopher and
Stowe; Max and Harry Martin; and Aleksandra and Nikolas Gundelach. Lucy is also
survived by several special nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law, Jim Peterson;
two sisters-in-law Barbara Clark and Abby Llanos; and many special friends. She
was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, brothers Donald and
William Haring, and sisters Gail Immel and Bernice Schloemer.
The
family wishes to thank Lucy’s many friends, who always remembered her with
cards, phone calls, gifts and visits. A special thank you to her many care givers
at the
who cared for her and became part of her family.
Visitation: Her
family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 9:30 AM
until 11:15 AM at Grace Reformed Church, 163 E. 18 Street, Fond du Lac.
Service: At
11:30 AM on Tuesday, May 19, at Grace Reformed Church a funeral service
celebrating her life will be held.
Pastors Barry Vegter and Howie VandeGuchte will preside. Burial will follow at
