Margaret Schingen

Margaret Schingen

The smell of oysters and warm cream has
always meant one thing for the Schingen family in Fond du Lac-that Margaret
Schingen’s rich Christmas stew was soon to warm their bellies, most likely
followed by a fist-shake or a sharp-tongued barb from the irrepressibly witty
great-grandmother.

Margaret, 94, lived in
Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac her entire life. She was born
February 10, 1921 to
Christ and Louise Korth Salzman, raised her family there, and passed away March
24, 2015 at Touchstone Living Center in North Fond du Lac.

She loved music, especially polka, and was an
accomplished accordion player. That was how she met her future husband. Then
Margaret Salzman, she was asked to play at a
going-away party when Robert Schingen sold his father’s farm. Her polka and
pluck
stole his heart. On June 24,
1946 the two were married at St. Joseph’s Rectory in Fond
du Lac, Wis.

Prior
to her marriage, she was employed at Infant Socks. She also loved to play
games,
cards, watch the Green Bay Packers and collect
cardinals. Once a week she relished in
getting her nails painted by
volunteers at Touchstone.

But it was her family
that she devoted her life to. She took great joy in making for them
her decadent oyster
stew and banana cake.

Margaret is preceded in
death by her parents, husband and two sisters, Dorothy Thielitz
and Ruth Sabel.

She
is survived by two sons, Wayne (Jan) and Steve (Deb), six grandchildren: Scott
(Kelli), Joe (Karen), Sara (Jason Brzek), Andrew
(Eram), Tim (Stephanie), Mike and
seven great-grandchildren Max,
Katalia, Ben, Ellie, Ty, Robert and Madelyn.

She is also survived by
her sister Charlotte Braatz; sisters-in-law Eileen Hoey and Joan
Andrew; and
brothers-in-law Gordon and Jerome Schingen, and many other relatives and
friends.
