Roy J. Friedel
Roy J. Friedel, 90, of, Fond du Lac, died on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Hope. Roy was born in Fond du Lac on January 23, 1923, a son of William and Helen Seurer Friedel.
On June 25, 1949 he married Katherine V. Godin in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Wisconsin Rapids.
In 1942 Mr. Friedel began his employment with the Soo Line Railroad working in the blacksmith shop. In January of 1943 he joined the United States Army with the 382nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery, serving in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946. After his service to our country he returned to the Soo Line, retiring in January of 1984, after forty-two years of employment.
Roy was a member of Holy Family Parish and its Holy Name Society. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1904 having served as their Post and District Commander, State Inspector and State Surgeon. Roy was also a life member of the D.A.V. Chapter 11, a member and Sergeant at Arms with the firing squad for the American Legion Post 75, life member of the Military Order of Cooties Pup Tent 22, the Marine Corps League Detachment 552 and a member and past president of the Fond du Lac Bowling Association.
He is survived by two daughters, Kristine (Gordon) Lopes of Berlin WI and Ruth Ann (John) Regan of Valders WI; one grandson, Joshua (Christy Sanborn) Sucaet of Royal Oak MI; two beloved great grandsons, Greyson and Griffin Sucaet; one sister, Mary Helen (Normand) Campbell of Waukau WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and special neighbors Betty Ernest and Nancy Miller.
Roy is preceded in death by Katherine, his wife for almost fifty-seven years; three brothers, Edmund, Cyril and Norbert; two sisters, his twin sister, Ruth Pauly, and sister, Henrietta Mengel.
Visitation: Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 7:00 PM at the Zacherl Funeral Home, 875 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. There is no visitation Saturday.
Services: On Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Church, 271 Fourth Street Way. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, where the American Legion Post #75 will conduct military honors.
