Zoeneida Barfknecht

Zoeneida Barfknecht, age 77, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014 at her home in Mount Calvary.  She lost a five month battle with pancreatic cancer. Zoe was born on August 9, 1936 in Cayuga, Texas to E.C. and Navada Maye Thomas.  She is survived by her husband Harold; three sons, Jerry Thomas of Las Vegas, Andrew (Rebecca) Barfknecht of Menlo Park, CA and August (Rachel) Barnet of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Helen (Arnie) Bronk of Mount Calvary and two grandsons, Ethan and Liam Barnet.   Zoe also has a number of nieces and nephews in Texas. Zoe grew up in south Texas and went to high school in Rio Hondo.  She met Harold when a senior in high school and he was a lieutenant in the Air Force.  They were married May 1st, 1954 and shortly afterwards left for Hawaii on assignment.  They moved around frequently as new assignments were received and retired to Fond du Lac in 1982.  Zoeneida served 28 years as an Air Force officer’s wife.  She was a teller for Fox Valley Savings Bank for 17 years and worked recently as a poll worker for Forest Township. Zoe was a self-taught seamstress who sewed her own dresses as well as clothing for the whole family.  She was also a master knitter; undaunted by fairly complex patterns.  Zoe was a friend to everyone, loved little children and humbly shared her generosity and selflessness.  She had been very active in various volunteer church activities at Salem United Methodist Church in Fond du Lac. She loved to participate in ballroom and square dance activities, travel, flower gardening and doing activities such as skiing and snowshoeing, hiking and camping with her family.
