2017 HS Football Previews : Lomira Lions

The Lomira Lions enter 2017 looking to improve on a 1-8 record from 2016 and end a five-year playoff drought. That’s no simple task for coach Shane Obrigewitch, who took over late last year for Dwayne Dailey and now enters his first full-season as the head man at Lomira. Commitment was the Lions’ main focus this offseason. “We needed to get more guys in the weight room, more guys taking part in football activities, and I think we’ve done that. Our weight room attendance has been pretty good this summer and we have our kids excited.” Obrigewitch said.

The other key to turning around the Lomira program is consistency, Obrigewitch says. “The biggest problem last year is that we would just beat ourselves”, he said. “We’d play some really good football against some really tough teams and then all of a sudden we’d implode.”. Obrigewitch says “We were really young last year and we’re hoping some of those guys matured a little more”.

Gone from the Lomira team this year is a senior class that included Mitch Wroblewski, Chase Parr, Adam Kinyon and Collin Feucht, names who played some key minutes for Lomira football over the last four years. Obrigewitch says you can never replace seniors, you can only hope the new group of seniors takes ownership of the team and puts their own stamp on it. He says this year’s senior class got together and made this year’s theme “Building the Foundation”. Obrigewitch says they’re building that foundation through the weight lifting program and team bonding, among other things.

As for this year’s team, Obrigewitch expects seniors and two-way players Mitch Brath and Jacob Kuglitsch to play key roles on the team along with lineman Ira Manthey. Obrigewitch also says Matt Hanke, a state qualifier for Lomira’s wrestling team and current captain of the Lions team will also be a player to watch this season.
