A Fighting Chance If You Fall Through The Ice

It may never happen to you, but if you ever fall through the ice on a lake try to cling to the edge of the ice as best you can. That piece of advice from the Dive Team Leader of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department, Sergeant Jeff Bonack. He recommends getting as much of your body out of the water as you can. Hypothermia can kill you, but the process is sped up when you are in the water. Bonack says if you can manage to get your arms out of the water and onto the ice they will freeze to the ice and prevent you from slipping under the surface of the water even if you lose consciousness. That will allow you to breathe and give rescuers a chance to get to you in time.
