A Sunday Burn Pile Leads To A Monday Fire

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department was notified Monday morning (December 6th, 2021 at 8:18a.m.) regarding a cornstalk bales burning on a farm located on River Road in the Town of Oakfield.

When deputies arrived, they found cornstalk bales on fire and the fire threatening a nearby barn. Oakfield Fire Department and First Responders also responded.

The flames were seen coming from the bales of cornstalk covering an area of approximately 8ft by 300ft. The fire was contained to the bales and did not spread to the nearby barn.

Early investigation showed the previous afternoon workers had been burning a pile of garbage and believed that it had burnt itself out. Due to high winds overnight, the garbage pile was rekindled and spread to the bales of cornstalk. The fire is not considered suspicious. No animals or buildings were harmed and no injuries occurred.

Assisting at the scene were fire departments from Lamartine, Mt. Calvary, Calumet, Eden, Waupun Country Fire, Fairwater-Brandon, Brownsville, and LifeStar EMS. The Village of Oakfield and Fond du Lac County Highway Department assisted by salting the route of travel from the water fill site to the fire scene.
