Appleton West Beats Fondy in FVA Opener

Appleton West (3-0, 1-0) downed the Fond du Lac (1-1, 0-1) boys basketball team 61-47 on Tuesday night in the Fox Valley Association opener at the Acuity Fieldhouse.  West, ranked 7th in the WBY Preseason Division 1 Basketball Poll, jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter hitting five 3-pointer in the opening frame.  Austin Berlick scored 9 of his 11 points in the quarter to pace West.  Fondy fought their way back into the game outscoring West 11-6 in the 2nd to trail 27-20 at the half.  West’s size, experience and athleticism was too much for the Cardinals as they pulled away for the 14 point win.  Max Schebel led Fond du Lac with 17 points while sophomore Brian Luteyn came off the bench score 10.  Robert Windsor and Logan Wendt each added 6.  Tyler Kryzanowski had 5 and Colin Pickart 2.  Eastern Illinois recruit Jake Verhagen led the Terrors with 20 points.  Berlick and Matt Reader each had 11 for West.  The Cardinals will host Kaukauna Friday night.  You’ll hear the game on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ and streaming at kfiz.com.  The Backyard Grill Pregame Show is set for 7:05pm with the tip set for 7:30pm on KFIZ.
