Back to Back State Champs!!!

The St. Mary’s Springs Academy (13-0) football team won their 2nd straight WIAA Division 6 state football championship with a 24-14 win over Eau Claire Regis (12-1) on Thursday afternoon at Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium.  St. Mary’s Springs got on the board early in the first quarter after Regis turned the ball over on their first possession on their own 15.  It took just four plays for the Ledgers to score as Evan Henderson rumbled in from 4 yards out to make it 7-0.  The score stayed that way until the 8:40 mark of the 2nd quarter when Henderson hit senior Eric Feldner on a 16-yard scoring strike to make it 14-0.  Regis added a pair of late 2nd quarter TD runs to even up the score at 14 before St. Mary’s Springs went on the drive of the game.  Taking control with on their own 25 yard line with less than two minutes to go in the half, the Ledgers went on a 13-play, 75 yard drive that was capped by an 7 yard TD pass from Henderson to Ryan Grandlic to give SMSA a 21-14 lead at the half.  Both team played to a stale-mate for the entire 3rd quarter.  Springs went up by 10 at the 6:51 mark of the 4th quarter when Mitch Herron capped an 11-play, 66 yard drive with a 24 yard field goal.   Henderson finished the day 14-18 for 144 yards and 2 TDs.  Eric Feldner caught 9 passes for 85 yards and a TD.  Ryan Grandlic also grabbed 4 passes for 31 yards and a TD.  Darin Ward paced the ground attack with 95 yards on 17 carries.  Ike Floyd added 62 yards on 17 carries.  Regis actually outgained St. Mary’s Springs 315 yards to 305. The Ledger defense also set a state finals record for all divisions, giving up minus-9 yards passing to Eau Claire Regis for the game.  The title was the 12th overall state football championship for SMSA.  They won eight WISAA titles (1983, 84, 90, 91, 95, 97, 98, & 99)and this was their 4th WIAA championship (2002, 09, 11, 12).
