Bee Keeping Ordinance Being Drafted For City Of FDL

The Fond du Lac City Council Wednesday night gave the go ahead to City staff to draft an ordinance that would allow urban beekeeping in the City. Don Butzke is a beekeeper from the Campbellsport area. He says honey bees produce a lot of products we can use and are important in the food chain for the pollination they provide to plants. The fire department is already trained to handle swarming and police officers and department of public works employees could get training about bees as well. City Manager Joe Moore says in addition the UW-Fond du Lac Extension already teaches classes on beekeeping. Fire and Rescue Lieutenant Todd Shippee is also a beekeeper. He says allowing bee keeping in rural areas of the City would be good for the City overall.
