Birky Challenge Set for Saturday

The annual Birky Challenge is set to take place Saturday to honor fallen Fond du Lac police officer Craig Birkholz. The cycling challenge raises money for scholarships and charities related to law enforcement.

Officer Ryan Williams says the challenge has raised an unbelievable amount of money since Birkholz’s death in 2011. Williams tells us “We can give out scholarships for the rest of my life, which is an awesome thing. So then we actually got together in a meeting about well what’re we going to do? Should we just stop having this event? And what we did was talk to survivors and Craig Birkholz’s family and said ‘what do you guys want to see done? And they said this is such a great event and there are so many great charities out there, we’d like you to give to those charities.”

There are options for 20, 40, and 67 miles – the last honoring Birkholz’s badge number. Registration opens at 6:00 tomorrow morning, but will also be open from 5-7pm tonight at Grace Christian Church. On-site registration costs $40.
