Bob Haase Another Can Of Worms

Why?

It seems more and more we are asking “why”.   Another shooting, this time in Menasha claimed the lives of four people.  Why did the shooter take the lives of a father and his eleven year old daughter along with another man before taking his own life. He did not know the people he killed or wounded, but apparently because of a fight with his girlfriend he just wanted to kill someone.  Things like this seem to be happening all the time all over America.

Many people blame it on guns, but I think the problem is a lot more complex than that.  If they did not have guns, they would be using automobiles, bombs, or something else. If someone wants to hurt or kill someone there are many ways to do it.  The big question is Why?

I think there are more and more people that never learned to handle criticism, failure, and other problems leading to severe depression.  We don’t want to give grades in school or scores in competitive sports because it might make our children feel bad.  Yet we let them play video games where the winner is decided by how many people they kill and how many things they blow up. They don’t learn the value of life and they don’t learn how to handle stress, disappointment, or failure.  Life is not always fair and we all face many problems throughout our lifetime, so Why don’t we do a better job of teaching people how to handle these problems.

Less and less people are attending church or believe in God.  We have more broken marriages that have an adverse effect on the entire family.  The family unit is not the same as it use to be and life has become so complex most families can’t even find the time to eat supper together.  Our interaction with friends has been reduced to text messages instead of being there in person to help. When people have problems leading to severe depression it seems like there is no one to go to.

There are more and more kids today that are on some kind of prescription drugs to help them cope and make it through school.  There are more and more adults that are on some kind of prescription drug to help them cope with work and life.  I believe that even many of the additives in our foods are having an effect on our body chemistry and changing the way we feel both physically and mentally.

The Ten Commandments makes sense to me even if you don’t believe in God, go to church, or believe where they came from.  Look them up on your computer and tell me which one does not make sense.  Tell me that the world would not be a better place is we lived by them, especially “Thou shall not murder”.   Unfortunately it seems they are not politically correct and might offend someone.

It may sound like I am preaching but I am simply asking you to think about Why these killings are taking place. I am also stating some of the reasons I believe this is happening and hoping someone can find some real solutions to this problem.  Banning guns will not reduce the killings because we would only be getting rid of one tool and would not eliminate the reason or reasons Why.  Why do you believe this is happening?
