Burn Awareness

The Division Chief for Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue says the recent Burn Awareness Weeks serves as a needed safety reminder. Troy Haase says children suffer burns from unattended appliances like clothing and curling irons. He says 20,000 children under the age of 15 suffer burns that way. He says others suffer burns from heating sources. He says 16,000 children suffer burns from grills, ovens, and stoves. He says you have to make sure there are safe zones for kids, which means turning handles for pots and pans inward so kids can’t reach them. According to statistics from the International Association of Firefighters and the American Burn Association between 2010 and 2014 approximately 486,000 people were seen in Emergency Departments for treatment of non-fatal burn injuries.
