Cougars Fall Short in D3 Championship, Finish as State Runner-Up

Alyssa Muench had double-digit strikeouts in the circle
again, but the Cougars couldn’t muster enough offense as Campbellsport fell 4-0
to Poynette in Saturday’s Division 3 Softball State Championship Game at
Goodman Diamond in Madison. Muench struck out 15 batters, but gave up seven
hits and four runs, while walking one. Her counterpart, Casey Fountain tossed a
one-hit shutout, with 13 strikeouts. The Puma’s offense scored a run in the
third, then three runs in the fifth to create the final margin. Morgan Fryman
had the lone hit for Campbellsport in the game – which came on a bunt single in
the fourth inning. Campbellsport closes the season at 17-8, Poynette closes a
perfect 30-0.

Despite the loss, Campbellsport has a lot to be proud of.
The softball team’s first ever trip to state included their first ever win at
state – over Southern Door in Friday’s semifinals – and there’s a State Runner-Up
trophy to be put on display at the High School.
