Could E-Scooters Be Coming To Fond du Lac?

The City of Fond du Lac is one step closer to becoming the latest home for electric scooter rentals.

Ordinance 3751 was presented Wednesday night, which would create Chapter 242, allowing for the use, parking and rental of electric scooters within designated areas of Fond du Lac.

Dyann Benson, Community Development Director for the City of Fond du Lac, told City Council Wednesday night, they have been approached by a company looking to roll out the option.

“The city was approached by Bird Scooters late last summer, to determine if there would be an opportunity for rentals of electric scooters to come to our community.”

Benson said the city has taken a very deliberate approach to the plan.

“You (city council) have the survey results from about 6 communities that we surveyed. We took a very slow and deliberate process. We’ve visited other communities where they have them, and we wanted to learn from their communities.

Bird Scooters are already being used in cities across the state, including Appleton, Green Bay, Waukesha and Whitewater among others.

Councilmember Tiffany Brault likes the idea.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity. I especially think some of our college students might really enjoy having these scooters around town as another way of getting around, because many college students don’t always have a car. Hopefully it will also be kind of fun for them too.”

Bird Scooters had already made a presentation to the Downtown Partnership Board of Directors.

Council did approve the ordinance on a vote of 6-0, with Donna Richards not in attendance.
