Council Verbally Supports Light Rail In FDL
The extension of what is now known as the Amtrak “Hiawatha” Line could run directly through Fond du Lac, if the 15-year vision laid out by Amtrak officials moves forward.
Fond du Lac City Council heard from City Manager Joe Moore Wednesday night, with Moore presenting a tentative letter that would be signed off by numerous municipalities in the state, including Oshkosh, Menasha, Neenah, Appleton and Green Bay to name a few. Those cities would be included in what would be an I-41 extension of Amtrak service.
Moore said Amtrak is looking at expanding tracks and lines that would make sense for parts of the state, and would be a great opportunity for the Fond du Lac area.
While there was no vote on the matter, the majority of council did verbally support the initial step. A key component of the expansion would revolve around Amtrak being able to secure adequate federal funding to support the project.
