CTCI Funding Was Not Illegal, Judge Rules

A Dane County judge has ruled against a conservative law group that claimed that private funds that were used to help run the 2020 election constituted bribery.

Judge Stephen Ehlke said on Wednesday that the plaintiffs in the case failed to tell the Wisconsin Elections Commission exactly what laws were violated by clerks for accepting those funds.

“The commission should not be put in the position of having to guess what violation of election law is alleged. And then be faulted later when they didn’t guess correctly what it is.”

Ehlke says nothing in either Wisconsin or federal law prohibits a clerk’s office from using private grant funds or having consultants help with elections. The grants were provided by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s Center for Tech and Civic Life.
