DNR Happy To See Deer Hunters Using Venison As Healthy Meat Source

The gun deer season starts this weekend, and the Department of Natural Resources is ready to see hunters back in the woods and fields to bring home venison. DNR Wildlife Management Program Director Eric Lobner says the department is happy to see people hunting to put food on the table the rest of the year.

“We’re seeing definitely a resurgence in that interest in having that locally grown protein source that is very low in fat as a healthy food source.”

Lobner says Wisconsin’s unique combinations of forests, fields, savannahs, and rivers have traditionally brought cultures together to find food and that the deer hunt is a continuation of that tradition.
