Evers’ “Peoples Maps” Rejected By 17 Dems

Legislative maps drawn by Governor Tony Evers “Peoples Maps Commission” were overwhelmingly rejected in the state Assembly.

Majority Republicans introduced the maps as a courtesy during Thursday’s redistricting debate. They failed on a 77-21 vote, including “No” votes from 17 Madison and Milwaukee area Democrats.

Milwaukee Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez received a standing ovation, after noting the Evers’ maps dramatically reduce the number of districts with black and Hispanic majorities. Republican drawn maps approved by the Assembly are now headed to almost certain vetoes by Evers, leaving redistricting in the hands of either a federal court or the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
