Fall Sports in FDL School District Will Be Played in “Alternative” Spring Season
Fall sports will be on hold for the Fond du Lac School
District.
The Fond du Lac School Board voted Monday night to move all
fall sports offerings for the district to the WIAA’s “alternative” fall season,
which will take place in the spring.
The decision comes after positive COVID-19 tests in Fond du
Lac County continue to increase over the last several weeks, and a shift back
to “Phase One” of the county’s Safe Restart plan. The Fond du Lac County Health
Department reported 95 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county between 2
pm Friday and 2 pm Monday. That includes 88 more active cases, and seven “released”
cases. Health Department guidelines would have shut down “high risk” sports –
including Football, Boys Soccer and Girls and Boys Volleyball – through October
1st, but the board voted to move all fall sports to the spring
option.
The change means that those “high risk” sports, which already
saw the start of their season delayed until September 7th, will now
have to wait until late February or early March to start their season. It also
means that sports whose seasons just got underway – like Girls Golf, Girls
Tennis and Boys & Girls Cross Country will have their seasons “paused”
until the spring.
Dave Michalkiewicz, Athletic Director at Fond du Lac High School
said that while they are “disappointed” about the decision, they “plan to do
what is necessary to offer a meaningful season in the early spring.”
Steven Jorgensen, head football coach at Fond du Lac High
School also expressed his disappointment about the decision, saying there are “Many
obstacles we will overcome this spring” and that they will “do all we can to
provide our Seniors the best season possible when the time comes.”
