FDL City Council Gets Health Insurance Update

Fond du Lac City Manager Joe Moore gave the City Council an update on health insurance Wednesday night. Moore told the Council he expected the City’s insurance costs to be in the neighborhood of $4.68 million this year. The City is self-insured and Moore says they have a pretty good health insurance program for City employees. Moore then gave the Council a rundown of what the City could save if deductibles were increased from $500 to $1,000 for individuals and from $1,000 to $2,000 for families and the co-insurance was changed to an 80/20 split instead of the current rate with the City paying 85 percent. He says that would cut the total cost to $4.53 million. He says he didn’t see a need to make a change this year, but the scenario he presented to the Council was something they could consider during budget time if need be. Councilwoman Catherine Block says if it comes to making a change employees should be given a menu of options. The City has about 300 employees.
