FDL County Board Approves Special Election, Acting County Executive To Be Named

The Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors met in Special Session Wednesday evening, and unanimously approved, by a vote of 23-0, to hold a Special Election to fill the seat of County Executive.

The need to fill the open seat came as the result of the unexpected death of County Executive Allen J. Buechel, who passed away Sunday following a heart attack Saturday night.

County Board Chairman Martin Farrell, who is filling the role of interim County Executive, told the Board he does have the authority to name an Interim County Executive, and he intends to do so.

Farrell said another Special Session would be held next Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 5:30 p.m., where the Interim Executive would be named and the Board would vote on the approval.

The Special Election is set for June 7, 2022. If a primary is needed, the primary date would be May 10. And in following the timeline set in place by state statutes, nomination papers could be taken out as of Wednesday, March 30 but need to be turned back in no later than April 12.

There’s been no official word given as to how many people will run for the open seat. The person elected would fulfill the remainder of the current term, set to expire April 15, 2025.
