FDL County Sheriffs Dept Warns Of Ransomware Scam

A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy recently took a ransomware complaint from a couple who paid a company to remotely install antivirus protection on their laptop. The couple paid just under $200. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says a few months later the computer repair service contacted the couple. They said they were going out of business and wanted to refund their money. But they needed the couple’s bank account information so they could refund the money to their bank account. The couple didn’t give out their bank account information and not long after that the company remotely locked up their computer demanding money to unlock it. Waldschmidt says if you’re going to put antivirus protection on your computer deal with a reputable provider or store to accomplish that. He says cases like this are tough to investigate and even tougher to get convictions on because they usually involve someone overseas.
