FDL County Sheriff’s Deputy Enters Pleas In Fatal Accident

The mother of a 20-year-old Fond du Lac man killed when a Sheriff’s deputy crashed into his car in August of 2012 gave tearful testimony during that deputy’s court hearing yesterday in Fond du Lac County Court. Sarah Koenigs talked about the loss of her son Matthew during the hearing for 32-year-old Ryan Flood. Flood pled no contest to a charge of failing to drive an emergency vehicle safely and guilty to speeding. He was responding to a hit-and-run call when he crashed into Matthew Koenig’s car at County Highways B and K in the Town of Eden. Koenigs died at the scene. Flood expressed his sorrow to the Koenigs family and said he replays that night over and over in his head. Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel acted as the special prosecutor in the case. Flood will have to pay $14,000 in restitution. He’s also required to train others on emergency vehicle operation. There’s still a civil suit in which the Koenigs are seeking $1.5 million in damages. It’s scheduled for a jury trial in January of 2015.
