FDL HS Athletic Director Discusses Turf Field, Practice Facility

The conversation continues around Fond du Lac about the idea
of constructing a new turf football field and multi-use indoor facility at Fond
du Lac High School. Community support has grown for the idea after two flooding
events at Fruth Field in the last calendar year, and wet field conditions have
forced events and practices to be moved or rescheduled.

High School Athletic Director Dave Michalkiewicz says that
while the proposal for a new field and an indoor facility may seem like its
intended solely for athletics, there’s much more to it than that. “Our sports,
our activities are going to be extensions of the classroom,” Michalkiewicz
said. “The life skills that those kids learn in those settings are huge, and we
need to continue to provide them with opportunities, to be able to have a place
to practice – to have a place to have those opportunities to continue to grow.”
Michalkiewicz says the indoor facility would also be used by youth and adult
sports and activity leagues, the Rec Department and Phy-Ed classes at the high
school.

Michalkiewicz says the plans are still in the works, and
that the group behind the project idea is hoping to present more about it, and
any potential cost estimates to the school board at their next meeting.
