FDL Man Killed When ATV Fell Through Ice Identified

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office has released the
names of those involved in a water rescue last night on Lake Winnebago. Reports
say 55-year-old Peter Zacherl of Fond du Lac died after his ATV fell through
the ice about three-tenths of a mile off shore of Lakeshore Drive and Franklin
Avenue north of the City of Fond du Lac. An ATV driven by 23-year-old Daniel
Zacherl with 22-year-old Sabrina R. Butler as a passenger also fell through the
ice, but both were able to get out of the water. Authorities say Peter Zacherl
had gone under water for a period of time and was unconscious and unresponsive.
He was rushed to St. Agnes Hospital but was pronounced dead despite life saving
measures. Daniel Zacherl and Butler were taken to St. Agnes Hospital, treated
and released. The sheriff’s office says a third person, 69-year-old Maurice
Plummer of Fond du Lac was able to stop in time before falling through the ice.

Sheriff’s Officials stress that no ice is safe ice and
that ice conditions around the area vary greatly. They say the area where this
incident occurred has a working ice crack in the area which should be avoided.
Residents are encourages to use extreme caution when traveling on any frozen
body of water.
