FDL One Of The Sites For A Public Hearing On Common Core Standards
State Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt says he’s looking forward to hearing from the public on Common Core standards for education. Last week the state lawmaker from Fond du Lac was named the Assembly chair of a committee that will take a look at Common Core educational standards. States that signed onto the Common Core standards were awarded federal Race to the Top funds and those who didn’t weren’t. Thiesfeldt says there seems to be a connection to that. He says 45 to 46 states signed onto the standards, but a number are now taking a closer look at them. State Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers signed onto the standards, but the state legislature wasn’t involved and there were no public hearings. Thiesfeldt says now there will be public hearings and a chance to comment on Common Core educational standards. Four hearings have been scheduled. The first is at the State Capitol from Noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday. The second will be at the City-County Building in Fond du Lac on Thursday, October 17th from 2 to 8 p.m. The third hearing is at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire on Wednesday, October 23rd from 2 to 8 p.m. and the last will be in Wausau at the Northcentral Technical College from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30th.
