Fire At Washington County Tavern

Fire damaged a tavern in the Town of
Wayne Saturday afternoon. Washington County Sheriff’s officials say a passerby
stoppd to see if the Cross Roads Tap on County Road W was open and saw smoke
coming from underneath the front door and from a window well. A depty who
arrived at the scene saw the same thing and smoke coming from an exterior
basement entrance on the north side of the building, but there were no flames
visible. Five fire departments responded and were able to contain the fire to
the basement, but smoke damaged other levels of the building. Fire investigators
say it appears the fire was electrical in nature and started in the basement. No
one was in the building at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported.
The time of the fire call was 1:08 p.m.
