Fire Extinguisher Access

The Division Chief of Fire Prevention for Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue says you should give careful consideration to where you will be placing a fire extinguisher in your home. Troy Haase says you want to put them where you will have quick unobstructed access to them during a fire. He says it makes sense to want to place one in the kitchen, but if you have a fire in your kitchen flames might obstruct that access. He says it would be safer to keep it out of the kitchen, but within quick access. He says that may mean a closet or on a wall close to the kitchen. Haase says with some kitchen fires such as a cooking oil fire, it may simply mean having a lid handy to place over a pot or pan to put the fire.
