Fondy Grabs Share of FVA South With Win

The Fond du Lac football team clinched a share of
the VFA South Division Championship with a thrilling 26-21 win at Hortonville
on Friday night.  Keon Jefferson’s three
yard TD run with 3:10 left in the 2nd quarter was the only scoring
of the first half.  The wild 2nd
half saw four lead changes.  Hortonville
got a three yard Max Flunker TD run with 7:18 left in the 3rd quarter.  The Polar Bears converted the 2-point
conversion to take the 8-7 lead.  Fondy
grabbed the lead right back as Quinn Woelfel scored for 12 yards out.  Fondy didn’t make the 2-point try and led
13-8.  With 2:04 left in the 3rd,
Justin Maratik ran for an 8 yard score to extend the Fondy lead to 20-8.  Flunker caught a three yard score with 9:18
left in the 4th to make it 20-15 Fond du Lac
After Fondy muffed the kickoff, Flunker scored again on a 15-yard run to
make it 21-20 Polar Bears after the 2-point try failed.   The Cardinals rallied to re-take the lead at
the 2:53 mark when Justin Maratik scored from 3 yards out.  The key play on that drive saw junior Joe
Kuber rip an apparent interception out of the arms of a Hortonville defender to
give Fondy a 1st and goal.
Hortonville’s final drive ended when a fourth down pass fell incomplete
in the end with less than 20 seconds left.
Justin Maratik finished with 192 yards and 2 TDs.  The Cardinals are now 7-0 overall and 6-1 in
the conference.  Fondy hosts Wisconsin Rapids next
Friday at Fruth.  Fond du Lac last won a piece of a conference title back in 2002.
