Fondy Upsets Menomonee Falls

The 6th seeded Fond du Lac Cardinal football team shocked #3 seed Menomonee Falls 25-24 in the first round of the WIAA State Football Playoffs on Friday night.  Falls took less than 1 minutes to score on their first possession as Christian Almonte scored from four yards out.  The Cardinals countered that TD with a 4 yard TD run by sophomore Justin Maratik at the 2:02 mark of the first quarter to tie it at 7.  The Cardinals took their first lead of the game at the 5:15 mark of the 2nd quarter as senior Ty Krueger took a screen pass and weaved through the Indian defense for a 20 yard score.  The extra point was blocked and the Cardinals led 13-6 until :25 left in the half when Almonte broke free for a 30 yard TD and Falls led 14-13 at the half.  The Cardinals fumbled on their first possession of the 2nd half and Menomonee Falls quickly turned that into a 6 yard Almonte TD with 8:31 left in the 3rd quarter.  The Cardinals wouldn’t fold up though as Quinn Woelfel connected with Kyle Pierce on a 12 yard pass with 2:19 left in the 3rd.  After the 2-pointer failed, Fondy trailed 21-19  at the end of three.  After a Fondy interception, inside their own 20, the defense held the Indians to just a field goal to stretch the lead to 24-21.  Fondy took over with 8:09 left in the game trailing by five and marched down the field and took the lead on a 3 yard Maratik TD run with 3:12 left.  The Cardinal defense held and the offense ran the clock out, moving Fondy into the 2nd round of the playoffs.  Fondy will host #2 seed Germantown next Friday night at Fruth Memorial Field.  You’ll hear it on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ.
